THE PROGRAM AND ITS PURPOSE

The Global City Indicators Program provides an established set of city indicators with a globally standardized methodology that allows for global comparability of city performance and knowledge sharing. This website serves all cities that become members to measure and report on a core set of indicators through this web-based relational database.

THE INDICATORS

The Program is structured around 22 “themes” that measure a range of city services and quality of life factors.

Welcome Kabul, Afghanistan - GCIF's 100th Member! Over 100 cities are now contributing to the Global City Indicators Facility database.

2010 Global Mayors Forum – November 5-8, 2010, Hong Kong and Shenzen, China
The GCIF will be participating in the Global Mayors Forum in China to introduce the Global City Indicators Program to Chinese cities and their mayors.

United Cities and Local Governments Asia Pacific Regional Section (UCLG-ASPAC) Congress October 18-22, 2010, Hamamatsu, Japan
The GCIF will be sponsoring a session to introduce the Global City Indicators Program to cities in the Asia Pacific Region and to facilitate future cooperation with organizations working on climate change action, urban systems and local government approaches.

ICLEI – 1st World Congress on Cities and Adaptation to Climate Change May 28-30, 2010, Bonn, Germany
The GCIF will be participating in ICLEI’s 1st World Congress on Cities and Adaptation to Climate Change.

Carbon Expo – May 26-28, 2010, Cologne, Germany
The GCIF will be participating in the Carbon Expo in Cologne. The Global City Indicators Program will be presented as a tool to assist cities with climate change challenges allowing cities to track and measure their mitigation and adaptation efforts.

Helsinki Design Lab Sustainability studio - May 24-28, 2010, Helsinki, Finland
The GCIF will be providing indicator expertise to this Sustainability studio on achieving a carbon neutral strategy for Finland.

The Comparative Genetics of Cities: Towards an Integrated Methodology for Pragmatic Urban Decision-making - May 21-23, 2010, London, UK
The GCIF will be contributing experiences in setting up and running an Indicators Facility.

CMHC Sustainable Housing and Communities Working Group April 26, 2010, Montreal, Quebec
The GCIF will be presented to CMHC members during the National Housing Research Committee’s Sustainable Housing and Communities Working Group session

Greater Toronto Area Roundtable – April 23, 2010, Guelph, Ontario
The GCIF will be presenting the Global City Indicators to cities of the Greater Toronto area to discuss the need to agglomerate indicators for municipalities within the metropolitan area.

United Nations - World Urban Forum 2010
GCIF hosted two networking events with member cities and launched its first Annual Report at UN HABITAT’s World Urban Forum in Brazil 2010.

"City Indicators and Comparative Measurement" - Wednesday March 24, 2010 - 14:00 to 16:00, room W2-15
GCIF hosted a roundtable with global cities, urban practitioners and international organizations to discuss the importance of globally comparative indicators. Preliminary first year data was presented by the city panelists as “City Reports” and a Global City Indicators Report 2010 was launched. This event was open to all cities and interested international and local organizations and citizens.View Event Program

"Towards a Comparative City Set of Indicators" - World Urban Forum 2010 - Monday March 22, 2010 - 14:00 to 16:00, room W3-18
GCIF co-hosted a networking event with the City of Sao Paulo for a number of Brazilian cities in partnership with the Ministry of Cities of Brazil, the Cities Alliance, the World Bank and the Monitoring and Research Division of UN-HABITAT. The need for a standardized set of indicators was examined at both the city level and the national level in Brazil. UN-HABITAT's Expert Group Meeting - "The Global Urban Trends: New Paradigms in Developing Indicators for Urban Observatories" - Dead Sea, Jordan, February 8-10, 2010
The GCIF participated in the Expert Group Meeting to present the GCIF set of indicators and to discuss the current state of urban indicators.

World Future Energy Summit - MASDAR City, Abu Dhabi UAE, January 18-21, 2010
The GCIF was presented in the session "A New Low2No Carbon Urbanism" at the World Future Energy Summit in Abu Dhabi. The session explored questions around how existing cities should evolve and what are the economic, policy and regulatory conditions that will affect systematic change using case study examples from around the world. The Global City Indicators Facility was presented as a case study.

Urban Age Institute - Sustainable City Finance - New York, January 7, 2010
GCIF participated in the "Sustainable City Finance" event co-hosted by the Urban Age Institute and the New York Academy of Sciences in New York City to discuss the role of a global standard set of city indicators for more effective city management and sustainable city planning.

Third National Land Congress - Merida Mexico, October 28-30, 2009
GCIF presented the Global City Indicators Program at the Third National Land Congress in Merida, Yucatan Mexico to introduce the Program to Mexican cities and the Mexican National Government.

World Bank - A Dialogue on Cities and Climate Change - Washington, September 2009
GCIF participated in the World Bank event "A Diagloue on Cities and Climate Change" for discussion with private sector partners and other institutional partners.

CITYNET Yokohama Congress – Yokohama, Japan September 7-11, 2009
The Global City Indicators Facility attended the CITYNET Yokohama Congress in Japan to present the Program to cities in the Asian region.

Philippines Training Workshop – Manila, Philippines September 11, 2009
GCIF co-hosted a training workshop with the League of Cities of the Philippines to train current member cities in the Philippines to enter data on the GCIF website and to introduce the Global City Indicators Program to potential new members.

Vietnam Workshop – Haiphong, Vietnam September 18, 2009
The GCIF presented the Global City Indicators Program at the workshop on Inidcators for Urban Management hosted by Haiphong city.

Ontario Research Fund – Research Excellence – July 2009
The Global City Indicators Facility submitted an application to the Ontario Ministry of Research and Innovations for a $4 million research grant. If successful, this grant will assist the GCIF with expanding its activities and sustaining the Program.

World Bank Urban Research Symposium – Marseilles, France June 2009
The Global City Indicators Program was presented to researchers and practitioners at the Urban Research Symposium. The GCIF Director presented a paper titled “City Indicators on Climate Change: Implications for Policy Leverage and Governance”.

Japan Workshop June 2009
A workshop on the Global City Indicators Program was hosted by PADECO. Cities from Japan, Vietnam and Indonesia were present. The Program was presented to city leaders and discussions were held on the use of indicators and the expansion of the Global City Indicators Program in the Asian region.

Carbon Expo – Barcelona June 2009
The Global City Indicators Facility participated in two World Bank panels at the Carbon Expo in Barcelona: “Creating Urban Carbon Assets: From Concepts to Action” and “Climate Challenge – A Voice for Cities”. The Global City Indicators Program was presented as a tool to assist cities with climate change challenges allowing cities to track and measure their mitigation and adaptation efforts

Cities Symposium – Barcelona June 2009
The Global City Indicators Facility participated in a Cities Symposium “Cities, Climate Change and Finance: Elements for a Cities-Led Agenda on the Road to Copenhagen” sponsored by the World Bank, City of Barcelona and Government of Spain.

ICLEI World Congress – Edmonton June 2009
The Global City Indicators Facility participated in the ICLEI World Congress in Edmonton and made presentations in two sessions: “Governance and Planning Solutions for an integrated eco-city approach” and “Climate and Energy Resources – Project Market”. A presentation on the Global City Indicators Program was made during the first session and a roundtable was held in the second session to introduce participants to the Global City Indicators Program and host a discussion on the use and practice of indicators in the delegates’ cities.

World Bank Sustainable Development Network Workshop – Washington March 2009
GCIF presented the City Indicators Program to the World Bank Sustainable Development Network “Building a Stronger Results Platform”

Angola Workshop
GCIF was in Angola for expert group meetings with the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs to discuss the use of city indicators and membership of Angolan cities.

UN-HABITAT Conference - Jordan
GCIF presents its work to the "Second Regional Conference on Creativity and Initiatives of Development in Arab Cities" in Amman, Jordan on April 27-29.

Greenhouse Gas Index
A Greenhouse Gas Index for measuring climate change in cities is now under development with the World Bank.

International Studies Association - New York
GCIF organized a panel for ISA in New York City Feb 15-18, 2009 "Cities and Global Governance: Typologies" as part of a themed cluster titled "Cities as New Sites of Global Governance." GCIF was represented by the World Bank and GCIF Director.

Intergovernmental Panel on Cities and Climate Change - Columbia University
The Director of GCIF attended the IPC3 Conference and is the lead author of the IPC3 Report's Concluding Chapter on Cities and Governance.

GCIF Offical Launch, UN WUF - Nanjing
The Global City Indicators Facility was offically launched at the United Nations World Urban Forum in Nanjing, China November 2008.

Practitioners’ Roundtable on Energy Efficient Cities – World Bank October 2008
GCIF presented the City Indicators Program to the World Bank Energy Efficient Cities Workshop.

Partnership with UN-HABITAT MOU
A GCIF institutional Memorandum of Understanding is under development with UN-HABITAT.
